Christmas Eve Box Ideas for an Australian Summer
Share
A Christmas Eve box is a small box opened on the evening of 24 December, and most of them hold the same four things: something to sleep in, something to read or watch, a treat, and one small thing for the morning. The trouble for an Australian family is that nearly every list of ideas was written for a northern winter. Slippers, fleece blankets and hot chocolate make less sense when the December average top in Brisbane is 29.7°C, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.
This guide keeps the four slots and swaps the winter fillers for ones that suit an Australian Christmas Eve. Where it mentions socks, the sizes and prices are from our own Christmas range, read from TipSoxx product pages on 21 October 2026: 34 styles in stock, from $6.99 for the toddler pair to $18.99 for the three women's Nordic crews.

What goes in a Christmas Eve box?
Fill four slots and the box is done. The table shows the usual northern version of each slot and a version that works in a warm December.
| Slot | What the usual lists suggest | What suits an Australian Christmas Eve |
|---|---|---|
| Sleep | Flannel pyjamas, slippers | Cotton short pyjamas; a pair of light Christmas socks for the photo, not for bed |
| Read or watch | A Christmas book, a DVD | A picture book or a movie chosen together; a printed "ticket" for an outdoor movie |
| Treat | Hot chocolate mix, marshmallows | Icy poles in the freezer with a note, a lolly bag, or a summer fruit you only buy at Christmas |
| Tomorrow | An ornament, reindeer food | Reindeer food for the lawn, a Christmas-morning outfit piece, or socks to wear on the day |
The fourth slot is where socks earn their place. A pair of Christmas socks laid out on the 24th is something a child, or a grown-up, actually wears the next morning. The first slot is where they do not belong: a cotton crew sock in bed on a warm night is the opposite of what most people want.

Christmas Eve box ideas by age
The four slots stay the same; what fills them changes with age. One limit to state plainly: in our own Christmas range, the only children's size is the Kids' Holiday Crew, which fits a foot of about 13 to 16 cm, roughly ages 1 to 4, according to its product page. We do not make a Christmas print between that and an adult women's size, so for a school-age child the sock slot is better filled from our everyday kids' range, which goes up to a 22 cm foot (about ages 6 to 10), or left out.
| Who the box is for | Sleep | Read or watch | Treat | Tomorrow |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Toddler (1 to 4) | Short cotton pyjamas | A board or picture book | A small lolly or a frozen yoghurt tube | Kids' Holiday Crew socks ($6.99, foot 13 to 16 cm) |
| School-age (5 to 12) | Pyjamas in their favourite colour | A chapter book or a family movie | A lolly bag | Reindeer food, a craft for Christmas Day |
| Teenager | Lounge shorts or a sleep tee | A movie voucher for the holidays | Their favourite snack | Women's or unisex Christmas socks if they fit an adult size |
| Adult or couple | Linen or cotton sleepwear | A paperback, a puzzle | A bottle of something cold, chocolates | A pair of Christmas socks each for the morning photo |
For a teenager, check foot size before choosing socks. Our women's Christmas crews mostly fit a 22 to 26 cm foot, and the Nordic crews come in S/M and M/L. The unisex and men's crews come in EU 39 to 42 and EU 43 to 46. If you are not sure, what size socks do I need walks through measuring a foot.

Matching Christmas socks for a family box
A family box usually puts one matching item in for everyone, and socks are the cheapest way to do it. Matching is harder than it sounds, though, because the same print is rarely made in every size. In our range the reindeer-and-snowflake look comes closest: the unisex Reindeer Christmas Crew covers adult feet in two sizes, and the toddler Kids' Holiday Crew has a Red Reindeer colourway. That pairs a reindeer theme across ages rather than an identical sock.
If an exact match matters more than the print, choose by colour instead. A red pair for every person reads as matching in a photo even when the designs differ. Everything we have in stock for Christmas is in the Christmas socks collection.

How much does a Christmas Eve box cost?
As much as you put in it, but two budgets cover most families. The sock line in each is costed from our own prices. The rest are typical items you would buy anywhere, so their prices are left to you.
| Box | What goes in | Socks from our range |
|---|---|---|
| About $20 per toddler | Pyjamas you already planned to buy, a library book wrapped up, reindeer food made at home | One Kids' Holiday Crew at $6.99, or $17.99 with $11 standard postage if it is the only item |
| About $40 for a couple | A puzzle or paperback and a treat, plus two pairs of socks | Two unisex or men's crews at $14.99 each, $29.98; $40.98 with $11 standard postage on their own |
Postage changes the sum for a small order. Our standard shipping is $11 for an order under $69, according to our shipping policy, so one $14.99 pair arrives at $25.99. If you are buying for a few boxes at once, the adult Christmas styles are part of our Build a Pack offer of 20% off four or more pairs. Six $14.99 pairs come to $71.95 after that discount, past the $69 free-shipping line; the worked table for other pack sizes is in our Kris Kringle gift ideas under $20. The toddler pair sits outside the pack offer.
When to order for Christmas Eve
Order by Tuesday 15 December for standard shipping and Wednesday 16 December for express, if the parcel is going to NSW, the ACT, Victoria, Queensland or South Australia. Those dates are our estimate from our shipping policy, not a guarantee, and the policy notes that processing can take longer in peak periods: we dispatch from Canberra within 1 to 2 business days, standard delivery takes 2 to 4 business days after that and express 1 to 3. Counting back the longest case from Wednesday 23 December gives the two dates above.
Western Australia and the Northern Territory need more time. Australia Post's 2026 Parcel Post cut-off, a fair guide to how long the national network needs in December, is 14 to 18 December for WA and 14 to 17 December for the NT, as reported by SBS, against 21 December for most interstate parcels. Allow for our processing time on top and the safe order date for those states moves to about Thursday 10 December. For Tasmania, where the Parcel Post cut-off is 16 to 21 December, aim for Monday 14 December.
| Where it is going | Australia Post Parcel Post cut-off (2026) | Suggested latest order date with TipSoxx |
|---|---|---|
| NSW, ACT, VIC, QLD, SA | 21 December interstate, 22 December within the state | 15 December standard, 16 December express |
| Tasmania | 16 to 21 December | 14 December |
| Western Australia | 14 to 18 December | 10 December |
| Northern Territory | 14 to 17 December | 10 December |
Cut-offs from Australia Post via SBS News. Our suggested dates add our 1 to 2 business days of processing. Delivery estimates are estimates and can run longer in December.
For express, SBS reports Australia Post's Express Post cut-off as 23 December for most of Australia, 22 to 23 December for Western Australia and 22 December for the Northern Territory.

Christmas Eve box ideas for adults
An adult box drops the pretence that it is for the children. The four slots still work: sleepwear, a film or a book, a treat that is not for sharing, and something for the morning. Socks fit the morning slot here as well, and a pair keeps getting worn after Christmas Day.
For an adult Christmas print that is not loud, the Nordic crews are the quiet end of our range: tree, reindeer and snowflake knits, mostly in muted colours, at $18.99, made in two sizes. Two of their three product pages call them a "cozy winter knit", so they suit a cool Christmas morning in Hobart or Canberra better than a hot one in Darwin. For a louder pair, the unisex and men's Santa crews are where the trumpets, beer steins and sunglasses live. If the box is a Secret Santa or Kris Kringle gift rather than a family one, our Kris Kringle gift ideas under $20 covers the budget side, and are socks a good gift covers whether they will be welcome. For the teacher on your list, teacher Christmas gifts in Australia sets out what teachers are allowed to accept, and if the next event on the calendar is the office party, work Christmas party outfit ideas covers what to wear in the heat.
Questions we get asked
What is a Christmas Eve box? A small box or bag opened on the evening of 24 December, usually holding pyjamas, a book or film, a treat and one thing for Christmas morning. It gives children something to open before bed and settles the evening.
When do you open a Christmas Eve box? On the evening of 24 December, before bed. Some families open it after dinner, others just before the bedtime story.
What do you put in a Christmas Eve box in summer? Keep the four slots and change the fillers: short cotton pyjamas instead of flannel, an icy pole or fruit instead of hot chocolate, and reindeer food for the lawn. Socks belong in the Christmas-morning slot, not the bedtime one.
What size Christmas socks fit a toddler? Our Kids' Holiday Crew fits a foot of about 13 to 16 cm, which its product page lists as roughly ages 1 to 4 and EU 21 to 25. Measure the foot rather than going by age if you can.
Can I get matching Christmas socks for the whole family? In our range, the reindeer theme comes closest: the unisex Reindeer Christmas Crew for adults and the Red Reindeer colourway of the Kids' Holiday Crew for toddlers. We do not make a Christmas print in school-age sizes.
Do Christmas socks get the 4-pair discount? The adult Christmas styles are in our Build a Pack offer of 20% off four or more pairs, applied at checkout. The toddler Kids' Holiday Crew is not part of it. Browse the full range in the Christmas socks collection.
